Why This Matters
Steel structures fail in two ways: they arrive damaged, or they arrive and do not fit. A warehouse frame, a mezzanine floor, an equipment platform or a steel building kit is a set of fabricated members that only works when every hole, plate and weld matches the fabrication drawings. On site — ten thousand kilometres from the workshop — a 15 mm hole offset, a 6 mm bow or a missing 8 mm fillet weld stops the entire erection. Re-drilling, re-welding and re-painting on site often costs more than the steel member itself.
A pre-shipment inspection catches those problems while the fabricator still owns them, the paint booth is still available and the container has not yet sailed. This guide explains what a professional inspector actually measures on a welded steel structure order, and how to write a brief that makes those measurements count.
What a Steel Structure Order Really Contains
Importers often send a packing list that says "steel structure — 1 lot". That tells an inspector nothing. Before booking, break the order into the items that carry the risk:

Dimensional Checks: Where the Money Leaks
Member length, straightness and squareness
Lengths are checked against the drawing, not against "close enough". For fabricated members the inspector records overall length, camber or bow (measured with a string line or straight edge), flange squareness and twist, and whether the cut ends are square and free of gouges. Hot-dip galvanised or painted members are re-checked after coating, because the dipping process can move thin sections.
Holes, bolts and connection fit
This is the single biggest source of on-site problems. The inspector checks hole diameter, hole pitch, edge distance, and — for critical connections — performs a match-fit or template check with a pin, bolt or tape. If a drawing calls for a 20 mm bolt in a 22 mm hole, a 24 mm hole is not a small deviation; it changes the connection.
Practical rule: ask for a match-fit of the first connection of each type. Ten minutes with a temporary bolt reveals more than a page of nominal measurements.
Material, Welding and Coating
Traceability and section thickness
Steel structures should arrive with mill certificates and heat numbers that can be matched to the delivered members. Inspectors verify section size and plate thickness with calipers or an ultrasonic thickness gauge, and check grade marking on anchor bolts and fasteners. A substitution from S355 to a lower grade is invisible to a tape measure and very visible in a structural calculation.
Weld inspection
Visual weld inspection covers leg length and throat size on fillet welds, reinforcement and undercut on butt welds, spatter, arc strikes, crater cracks, and completed weld length against the welding symbol. Where the drawing specifies it, the inspector arranges NDT (dye penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic or radiographic) with a qualified subcontractor. Ask for weld maps and certificates for critical joints.
Coating, packing and marking
Coating is measured as dry film thickness (DFT) at several points per member against the specification, after checking surface preparation (blast grade, salt contamination, primer type). Packing matters too: members are banded, timbered or bundled so they cannot rub in transit, and end faces are protected. Every bundle should be marked with the drawing / part number, and the packing list must match the actual contents — that marking is what a receiving team relies on at site.
� Add a container loading check to the inspection. Steel members are long, heavy and hard to reload once loaded badly. Loading supervision verifies sequence, blocking and lashing, and confirms that the last bundle on the list is really the last bundle in the container.
What to Put in the Inspection Brief
Give the inspector: fabrication drawings (correct revision), connection and bolt schedules, the welding specification, the coating specification with target DFT, the packing list and the loading plan. Add the defect policy: which deviations mean "hold the shipment" and which mean "notify and document". A brief that says only "check quality" produces a report nobody can act on.
Then schedule the inspection when the order is 100% fabricated, fully coated and at least 80% packed. A partially fabricated lot cannot be accepted — it can only be re-inspected later, which you pay for twice.
FAQ
What is the difference between a dimensional check and a weld inspection?
A dimensional check confirms the member's geometry: length, bow, hole positions, plate size and squareness. A weld inspection confirms how the parts are joined: weld size, length, continuity and internal soundness. Steel structures need both, and they are normally booked as one inspection with two work streams.
Do I need NDT on every weld?
No. NDT is expensive and slow. Specify it on the joints that carry the design load — typically complete-joint-penetration butt welds, moment connections and any weld the engineer marks as critical. Visual inspection plus weld maps covers the rest.
Can an inspector verify the steel grade without a laboratory?
The inspector can verify documentation (mill certificates, heat numbers, markings) and measure section thickness. Confirming chemistry and mechanical properties requires sampling and laboratory testing, which is arranged separately and takes extra time.
How long does a steel structure inspection take?
A typical order takes one to two man-days on site, depending on the number of members, the number of connection types and whether NDT or DFT testing is included. Complex kits with hundreds of drilled plates need longer, because every hole pattern must be checked individually.
Can inspection and container loading supervision be done on the same day?
Yes, and it is the most efficient approach. The inspector completes dimensional, weld and coating checks in the morning, then supervises loadout in the afternoon or the following day. One mobilisation, one report covering everything that leaves the factory.
